A Brief History of Newmar 

Let’s start with a little history lesson: Newmar was founded in 1968 by two men: Mahlon Miller and Marvin Newcomer (see where “Newmar” comes from?). They lived in a small town called Nappanee, Indiana, which is renowned for its local Amish craftspeople, especially for their woodworking. At the time, both worked for another RV manufacturer, but Mr. Miller and Mr. Newcomer shared a dream to someday found a company that would produce the world’s highest quality RVs. 

Eventually, Mr. Miller and Mr. Newcomer left their positions to start Newmar, hiring many of the Nappanee woodworkers along the way as a commitment that Newmar would remain true to both its locality and its craftsmanship. Combining state of the art technology with Amish quality construction, the company began production with just 100 employees: their first product was a fifth-wheel travel trailer called the Kountry Aire, released in 1971. 

Mahlon Miller purchased the entirety of Newmar in 1991 following Marvin Newcomer’s retirement, with the promise to keep the company local to Indiana. 

Luxury Class A Coaches and Power Slideouts

Under the leadership of Mahlon Miller, Newmar debuted its first Class A coaches in 1990, the Dutch Star and the Mountain Aire, both of which remain in production today. And in 1991, the company revealed one of the biggest innovations in the history of motorhome production: power slideouts. 

For a few years, Newmar’s competitors tried to steer buyers away from power slideouts, but by the fourth or fifth year of production, almost every other RV manufacturer began selling their own version of this game-changing innovation.

During the 2008 recession, newly-named President of Newmar Corporation, Matt Miller (Mahlon’s son), doubled down on the company’s commitment to quality and dedication to its employees, staying true to the company’s roots, even during economic hardship. In 2012, they announced a strategic decision to focus solely on their Class A coaches, which has ultimately brought their Comfort Drive™ steering system, the STAR foundation, and the industry’s first wheelchair-accessible Class A motor coaches to market. 

As a result of their dedication to craftsmanship and innovation, Newmar now has a long, storied history spanning multiple states and business models, and the name is synonymous with luxurious, meticulously-crafted recreational vehicles. And because of this longevity and commitment to quality, Newmar Corporation has more than earned the right to carefully consider who can sell their products and how.
