Top 5 RV Destinations in the Northeast USA
From charming hamlets to breathtaking natural views, the Northeast United States is brimming with wonderful RV destinations to whet your whistle. Though traditionally traveled during the autumn months for the incredible leaf-changing season, New England is also beautiful year-round, as long as you have a way to travel on ice or snow. Here are five great places to explore by RV in the Northeast USA.
New York City, NY
Though finding RV parking in Manhattan may prove challenging, it’s still certainly worth a visit to the city that never sleeps. You can RV camp in nearby Jersey City, NJ, and take a short ferry ride across the Hudson River to readily explore the city’s vibrant boroughs and famous landmarks. Check out hop-on-hop-off bus tours, hail a classic yellow taxi, take the subway, or hoof it through the Big Apple to make the most of your time there.
Things you won’t want to miss in NYC: The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, the Museum of the City of New York, Broadway, Grand Central Terminal, One World Trade Center Observatory, and SO much more. We could use an entire blog post talking about the things to do in New York City and still just brush the tip of the iceberg…but hey, that’s not a bad idea!
Acadia National Park, Maine
Whether you visit for fall foliage, fishing, hiking, or winter sports, Acadia is an enchanting destination to take on by RV. Take in the harmonious blend of rocky shores, dense forests, and serene lakes of this natural wonderland. Traverse the 27-mile Park Loop Road, which offers panoramic vistas and access to trails, including Jordan Pond Path and Precipice Trail. Don't forget Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the east coast, where you can catch a breathtaking sunrise.
RVers will find plenty of accommodations near Acadia National park, including Bar Harbor Campground, Schoodic Woods Campground, Smuggler’s Den Campground, and others. Most are open from May to October, and because of the short window of availability, we recommend reserving your spots a few months in advance.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Renowned for its picturesque beaches, charming lighthouses, and quaint seaside villages, Cape Cod offers the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Sink your toes into the pristine sands of Nauset Beach or take a scenic drive along the Cape Cod National Seashore. Don't miss the opportunity to visit Provincetown for its vibrant art scene and diverse culture. With its idyllic coastal charm and cultural sensibilities, Cape Cod is a captivating road trip destination.
Visiting Cape Cod by RV is surprisingly easy, as there are plenty of RV campgrounds nearby. From May 1 to October 15, Bay View Campground offers access to an arcade room, tennis court, and live music performances as well as easy access to Cape Cod. For in-season visits, a 3-night minimum stay is required, and the sites can accommodate up to 35-foot trailers.
Closer to Monomoy Island and Cape Cod National Seashore, Campers Haven RV Resort boasts its own 500-foot beach, a clubhouse, library, and food service along with pet-friendly campsites with full hookups. Other RV campgrounds to consider include Atlantic Oaks, Peters Pond, Bourne Scenic Park, Maple Park, and Sweetwater Forest. Many of these offer full hookups, pet-friendly sites, plenty of amenities, and special services to make the most of your Cape Cod experience.
White Mountains, New Hampshire
The White Mountains of New Hampshire are truly a nature lover's paradise. As you ride along the scenic Kancamagus Highway, beautiful vistas, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls will take your breath away. Lace up your hiking boots to tackle the Franconia Ridge Loop or visit Flume Gorge. There are also three railways to take in panoramic views of Mount Washington, plenty of caves to explore, and five unique theme parks to enjoy.
If you're visiting during the winter, the White Mountains also offer excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities at Loon Mountain, Bretton Woods, and other resorts. Immerse yourself in nature as you discover the unparalleled beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Whether you are looking to set up your RV as a home base for backcountry camping or for a full-amenity RV camping experience, there are plenty of campgrounds to meet your needs near White Mountain State Park.
Niagara Falls, NY and Canada
Featuring attractions, exhibits, miles of hiking trails, and one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the United States, Niagara Falls is a bucket list RV destination. Formed by the Niagara River, which drains into Lakes Erie and Ontario, Niagara Falls is technically three different waterfalls at the southern end of the Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between Ontario, Canada and the United States. Horseshoe falls is the largest of the three waterfalls, and it famously straddles the international border. The smaller but still majestic Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls lie within the US.
Visitors can take a paid helicopter or airplane tour, boat tour, or hike to the edge of the waterfalls. Other local attractions include a bustling art scene, an aquarium, the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, the Lucy Desi museum, outlet mall shopping, a comedy center, and many local wineries, among others.
When planning an RV trip to Niagara Falls, selecting the right campground is crucial. Fortunately, the region offers several options that cater to RV enthusiasts. One popular choice is the Niagara Falls KOA Holiday, situated just minutes away from the falls. This campground offers spacious RV sites, modern amenities, and even a heated swimming pool. Alternatively, you can opt for HTR Niagara (formerly the Branches of Niagara Campground), nestled amidst 70 acres of pristine woodland and featuring RV-friendly facilities, including full hookups and easy access to hiking trails.
