New Livestock Trailer
When it comes time to travel with your hogs, it’s important to have a trailer that is easy to maneuver, safe and simple to load, and built from high-quality materials. At Transwest, we partner with the best brands in livestock trailer manufacturing to bring you trailers that will safely contain your hogs on the road. Our hog trailers are built with plenty of square footage, slatted sides for ventilation and convenient ramps to make loading and unloading simple.
If you make frequent, long-distance trips with your animals, our gooseneck trailers are built with high weight capacity and have exceptional stability on the road, even under harsh weather conditions. For smaller loads of hogs or first-time trailer buyers, a bumper pull trailer is budget-friendly and offers a simple towing system. Both trailer styles come in various floor plans and sizes to accommodate your hogs, whether you need plenty of room for extra equipment or lots of floor space so your animals can move about safely.
We offer a range of financing plans to work with your budget, making it easy for you to purchase the trailer you want. Because we know the importance of keeping your trailer in working condition at all times, we also provide maintenance services, repairs, and a full line of livestock trailer parts and accessories. Whether you are raising feed pigs or transporting show hogs, our hog trailers will keep your animals safe on the road.
Like many animals, hogs may be wary of climbing inside an unfamiliar vehicle, especially if they have never worked with handlers before. One way to make the loading process easier is to introduce the hogs to the trailer at least 2 or 3 weeks before the scheduled trip. You can warm the hogs up to it by laying down straw on the floor and giving them daily meals inside the trailer. They may be wary at first, but given enough time they should become curious about the food. If your trip is scheduled for the morning, try to load them the night before and allow them to sleep inside. Stock trailers are made to hold your animals, so you shouldn’t have any problems keeping them inside overnight.
Giving your hogs enough space to move in the stock trailer is important for the pigs’ welfare and health. In general, if your pigs are between 40 lbs. and 60 lbs., you will need from 1.2 sq. ft. to 1.6 sq. ft. of space for each one. Larger market pigs between 240 and 288 lbs. will require around 3.7-4.97 sq. ft. per hog. Budget around 15-20 percent more space per pig if you are hauling them over a long distance or if the weather is exceptionally hot. This way they can safely lie down in the trailer. Be sure to give your pigs plenty of water before loading, and have water ready for them immediately after they unload.
Loading an aggressive pig into a stock trailer can be a difficult experience, particularly if your pigs are frightened and excitable. Handlers need to start early, work patiently, and remain calm and quiet. Give aggressive pigs plenty of time to get used to and explore the trailer.
If possible, park your trailer near their pen a few weeks before the loading date. Your pigs will probably be wary of trailer floors that are made from unfamiliar material. Try laying down some shavings or straw to make the floor more familiar. Some livestock trailers can be tilted down to the ground. This is a great way to make it easier for your pigs to step up. Finally, you should move your pigs in small groups whenever possible. Being with other pigs will make them calmer while working with a small group will make it easier for you to handle.
Yes, stock trailers are a safe and comfortable way to transport your hogs. Stock trailers are built to accommodate all kinds of livestock animals including sheep, cattle, chickens, goats, and pigs. Our hog or small animal trailers have individual pens. The gates separating the pens are air flow to allow the hogs to see one another, and air flow to travel through keeping the hogs cool. This allows your hogs to stay together during the drive while keeping them balanced across the trailer to avoid any clustering that may pose a hazard during a trip.
Most stock trailers have slatted sides that will keep your animals well-ventilated during a trip. When choosing a trailer for your hogs, make sure it has enough space to allow each animal to move and lie down, especially if you tend to transport them over long distances.
Pigs are prone to stress and heart trouble when it comes to traveling, especially long distances. However, by preparing well in advance, you can keep your pigs healthy and stress-free in your trailer. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to load the pigs, particularly if you are hauling them to an event. Use experienced handlers and try to focus on guiding the leading pigs first.
As far as the trip itself, your trailer should be covered to keep your pigs from sunburn. Make sure there is enough ventilation, especially during the summer. Consider using partitions to separate multiple hogs — this will ensure that the weight is evenly distributed in your trailer. You will also want to give each animal enough space to lay down during long trips.
The Cimarron Showstar hog trailer has made it much easier to load my hogs — I rest easy now knowing that they are safe and healthy on the road.
